Relationship is the Resolution: Why We Need WOSONS

If you’ve ever felt like your organization is spinning its wheels — juggling urgent needs, funding pressures, endless forms, and competing priorities — you’re not alone. Women-serving organizations across Nova Scotia are working in complexity.

Our work is complex but we also work in a state of complexity. This means you are part of a system that depends on interconnected and dependent relationships, has created a sense of funding scarcity and competition, and technology to create a condition in which interdependencies, power imbalances, and ignored relationship dynamics have resulted in unpredictable outcomes and delays in actions with respect to a plethora of recommendations.

What does it feel like to work in complexity?

It can feel like:

  • You’re doing good work but can’t always see progress.
  • Familiar solutions no longer work, yet new ones aren’t clear.
  • The system is shifting under your feet — full of churn, pushback, and change.
  • You see pockets of brilliance in your teams or communities, but they’re isolated and hard to sustain.

Complexity isn’t failure — it’s a condition of the times we live and work in. For example, in the world of gender-based violence prevention and survivor support, the systems around us are tangled with bureaucracy, scarcity, and competing demands. Every referral, policy, and funding agreement forms part of this web.

But here’s the thing: relationship is the antidote to complexity.

When we strengthen relationships — between staff, boards, funders, sectors, and one another — we unlock the creativity, innovation, and trust that complexity so often suppresses.

So… what is WOSONS?

WOSONS — the Women-Serving Organizations of Nova Scotia network — was created as a place to connect, learn, and lead together.

It’s where frontline wisdom meets system-level innovation, where stories from the ground can shape change at the top. And where we make time to slow down, connect deeply, and reimagine what’s possible.

Through regular gatherings, shared learning, and collaborative projects, WOSONS aims to:

  • Create adaptive spaces where ideas can grow and evolve.
  • Share pockets of excellence — those hidden successes already thriving within our organizations.
  • Support entrepreneurial and relational leadership that fosters creativity and courage.
  • Strengthen our collective capacity to navigate — and transform — complexity.

Why join WOSONS?

Because together, we can move from feeling stuck to shaping what comes next.
Because solutions are already here — hidden in plain sight — waiting to be shared.
Because when we lead with relationship, we build systems that last.

As Tuesday Ryan Hart reminds us, “Relationship is the resolution.” It’s not just the path forward — it’s the destination.
