Background
A 23-year-old woman contacted 911 because she needed assistance from her abusive relationship. She lived in a tent with her abusive partner and two dogs for three consecutive weeks. Eventually, she moved in with her mother, but the situation remained dire as her partner’s behaviour, coupled with addiction and criminal activities, created significant risks. After being forced into a relationship she received multiple legal charges because of her partner’s crimes making her situation worse.
Needs Identified
The client presented with the following needs:
- The client needed a secure home in which she could also safely care for her dogs who provided emotional support.
- She needs legal help to fight criminal charges based on events her partner committed.
- Support for overcoming the impact of addiction and trauma from the abusive environment.
- Safety and protection from her partner, who continued to exert control and threaten her security.
Support Provided
Another resident referred the client to a Transition House. At the Transition House:
- She received temporary shelter and support.
- The team assisted her with housing and connected her to a Community Resource Advocate (CRA) for additional help.
- Efforts were made to address her legal situation and connect her to available services to support her safety and recovery.
Barriers to Ideal Solutions
The following barriers complicated her access to an ideal solution:
- Addiction Issues: Her partner’s addiction, coupled with their shared environment, created additional challenges and risks.
- Criminal Charges: The woman was charged with crimes related to her partner’s activities, making it difficult to access resources and advocate for herself.
- Lack of Pet-Friendly Shelters: Shelters that accommodate pets were limited, delaying her ability to relocate to a safe environment.
- Coercive Control: The partner’s manipulation and abuse continued to restrict her freedom and create psychological barriers to seeking help.
Outcomes
The woman found temporary relief and support through the Transition House. This provided her with a foundation to begin rebuilding her life. She expressed her gratitude for the intervention, saying:
“I didn’t know what I would do until I came here. Thank you for helping me figure out my next steps.”
Recommendations for Systemic Change
This case highlights the need for systemic reforms to improve outcomes for survivors of domestic violence:
- Pet-Friendly Housing: The government should increase shelter capacity for pet acceptances to help survivors with animals get quick safe lodgings.
- Recognition of Coercive Control: The creation of legal systems that detect coercive control should guard survivors against punishment because of their abuser’s actions.
- Trauma-Informed Legal Support: Specialized legal expertise should help survivors overcome charges and other legal obstacles from their abusive situations.
- Support for Addiction Intersections: Programming should integrate dual approaches for dealing with addiction and domestic violence because survivors need full services specific to their circumstances.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Community members together with legal authorities need thorough education about complex forms of abuse, coercive control and addiction problems to develop better response systems.
