Case Study: Rebuilding After Sexual Violence

case1 (1)

Background

This case involves a 33-year-old woman and mother of two children, aged 18 months and four years. After enduring abuse from her addicted partner, she escaped to protect herself from the coercive sexual violence he had subjected her to. Her abusive partner violated her physical boundaries while forcing sexual contact which caused psychological and physical suffering.

Needs Identified

The victim required a secure environment for exploring her trauma within. The client demanded assistance for child care while she needed dedicated counselling services for sexual violence survivors together with resources to rebuild control over her life’s direction.

Support Provided

The woman was referred to a transitional house for immediate safety.  The housing complex provided specialized sexual violence counselling which specifically supported the needs of its survivor residents.  For privacy and convenience, counselling sessions were conducted over the phone, enabling her to share her story and build awareness of the abuse she endured.

Supportive services directed this woman toward a protective plan that safeguarded her and her children from new dangers. The abuse survivor received protection through Emergency Protection Orders (EPOs) which ensured her attacker had no legal way to contact her. Through these services, she received (parenting) guidance which helped her to deal with childcare responsibilities as she worked toward full recovery.

Barriers to Ideal Solutions

Fear was a significant barrier. She feared the authorities would claim her children if she disclosed the abuse because she feared losing her children altogether. Fear restricted her movements yet she took gutsy action and connected with Child and Family Services (CFS) and police authorities which gained her a Protective Emergency Order (EPO).

Prevalent societal assumptions regarding abusive relationships constitute a major obstacle that stops survivors from both asking for help and moving away from such abusive settings.

Outcomes

The intervention proved transformative for the client. Joining an anonymous support group allowed her to process her experiences in a safe, judgment-free environment. She expressed a newfound sense of empowerment, stating, “Now that I am in an anonymous group, I can learn about my experiences and settle through mindfulness. I can settle in my body.”

This sense of community and shared understanding helped her regain control over her life and work toward healing. The counselling services provided her with tools to rebuild her confidence and resilience while caring for her children in a stable and secure environment.

Recommendations for Systemic Change

To address barriers faced by survivors like this client, systemic changes are necessary:

  1. De-normalizing Abuse in Relationships: Efforts should focus on raising awareness about healthy boundaries and the unacceptability of violence in marriages or partnerships.
  2. Tailored Legal and Counseling Services: Streamlining processes to ensure survivors feel protected and supported without fear of losing their children.
  3. Community Education: Promoting acceptance and understanding of survivors’ experiences, especially in rural areas, to reduce stigma.
